The Tumwater Fire Department provides fire and EMS services to the City of Tumwater and the Port of Olympia Regional Airport  (By way of contract). Dashed lines on the map below show 7-minute response times from Station One (Headquarters) shaded in blue, and Station Two (North End) shaded in yellow.

Emergency Operations Division

Emergency Operations can be considered the heart of the Fire Department. The Emergency Operations Division is staffed by three 24-hour shifts, each supervised by a Shift Captain. 

Ready for Action

When the Engine Company and medics are not responding to emergency calls, they maintain the station and equipment and hone their knowledge and skills by regularly training each shift. They also provide public education and outreach with fire drills, mock drills, emergency preparedness training, specific technical fire/medical training and participate in neighborhood events to strengthen their connection to the community. Administrative Staff also provide fall prevention training.

Specialty Teams

The fire department partners with other Thurston County fire protection agencies in Specialized Operations Rescue Team (SORT) to provide rescue services to the public, and enhance the professional skills of city staff. In addition, one paramedic provides support to the interjurisdictional S.W.A.T. team

Training & Education

Firefighters must be ready for many different emergencies, so they train for low incidence, high impact scenarios. 

The Training Division develops curriculum, oversees delivery, and evaluates training through testing and observation at drills and actual incidents. The Training Officer is a full-time career firefighter (Lieutenant) within the department. This officer also oversees the Volunteer Firefighter Program, recruitment, and retention in coordination with the Volunteer Captain/Lieutenants. 

Entry-Level

Basic recruit training for career employees is through a 13-week Fire Academy Course at Bates Technical College. Upon graduation, employees are Firefighter 1 (FF1) and Firefighter 2 (FF2) certified with hazmat operations, and are also National Incident Management System (NIMS) compliant. 

Volunteer training

Volunteers receive a 150-hour training course through the Thurston County Recruitment Academy.

Resource Management Division

The Resource Management Division is responsible for records management, administrative functions and budget support for all divisions within the department. This division is responsible for managing information pertaining to personnel, payroll, fiscal management, emergency response data and public information. 

FEMA Reporting

This Division is also the primary Federal Emergency Management Act (FEMA) contact during natural disasters. We work closely with the Emergency Management Director at the state and regional level to coordinate/organize City-wide assessment and recovery documentation. The Resource Management Division is the program administrator for the department’s Fire-Reporting Software, as well as being responsible for completing the required annual National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) data in an accurate and timely manner. 

Commercial Inspections

Resource management is responsible for monitoring the submitted fire/sprinkler/range hood inspections of commercial occupancies within the City, in addition to the aforementioned duties.  The Assistant Fire Chief sends notification to property owners regarding inspections that have been completed, and notes deficiencies for their systems. The occupant then has 10 days to provide documentation of repairs, or a plan to accomplish said repairs to the Fire Department. Follow-up contact is made with the property owners and/or inspection companies until all deficiencies have been corrected and the system is operational. The department recently instituted a Fire Safety Inspection Program to help the Tumwater business community to prevent fires.
