About Our Community

The City of Tumwater is located at the base of the Deschutes River, where the water cascades to its final destination at the southern tip of Puget Sound. The rugged Olympic Mountains rise in the distance and Mount Rainier seems close enough to touch on a clear day. By road we’re at the junction of Interstate 5 and Highway 101. Tumwater is the southern gateway to Puget Sound’s mega-metropolitan region spanning several counties from Thurston and Pierce to King and Snohomish, including the cities of Tacoma and Seattle. Together, Tumwater and the neighboring cities of Lacey and Olympia, the state capital, form a community just over 290,536 in population.

Rich Traditions

Tumwater is the oldest American settlement on Puget Sound. The area was chosen for its many natural resources, rivers, prairies, forests and beaches. The vibrant mix of community-minded people and prosperous natural resources make Tumwater rich in history, community and opportunity.

Tumwater is perhaps best known as home to the former Olympia Brewery, owned by the Schmidt family. The brewery was the community's largest private employer for a significant part of the past century. Although the brewery closed in 2003, the historic Old Brewhouse stands as Tumwater’s most important architectural landmark. It is the last reminder of the flourishing riverside industries that once formed the heart of this town.

The tradition of brewing, quality drinking water and a strong sense community are celebrated in Tumwater. Revitalizing the heart of Tumwater and retaining our quality of life in this beautiful Northwest community is a priority.
