We are currently hiring for:
Expert fire & emergency medical services
Tumwater Fire Department members protect life and property—providing emergency medical care, fire suppression and prevention, public education, and community service with care and compassion to those in need.
Training & professional development
All firefighters participate in basic fire suppression and EMS training. Tumwater Fire Department is right-sized to offer every firefighter the opportunity for specialty training, assignments, and support for career advancement.
Compensation and benefits
This position offers a competitive salary and benefits package. Tumwater Fire Department is represented by the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 2409.
Candidates with less than one (1) year of paid experience and those who do not possess the minimum qualifications should apply as an entry level firefighter.
Selection process for entry-level firefighters
Step 1: Apply with the City of Tumwater
Candidates interested in this position must complete the written exam (firefighter selection tool) through Public Safety Testing (PST) and a city of Tumwater application for employment. Applications are available at the Government Jobs website.
Step 2: Written exam
Applicants interested in this position must complete the written exam (firefighter selection tool) through Public Safety Testing. Please visit Public Safety Testing for information regarding the testing process.
Step 3: Speed interview
All candidates with a combined score of 80% on the PST written test will be invited to participate in a 9-minute speed interview. Candidates must pass with a minimum of 70% to be considered for the next step. Volunteer points are added to passing scores for those who qualify.
Step 4: Oral board interviews
Top candidates from speed interviews will be invited to participate in oral board interviews. At the time of invitation for oral boards, applicants will be required to complete a city of Tumwater job application. Candidates must pass with a minimum of 70%.
Step 5: Eligibility list
Candidates will be placed on a ranked eligibility register based on their scores achieved on the PST Written Exam (40%) and the oral board interviews (60%), plus veteran's preference.
Step 6: Chief's interview
The top seven candidates will be invited to the chief's interview.

Pre-employment screening
The next step in hiring is a conditional offer of employment. Candidates will be required to participate in pre-employment screenings, including a medical and psychological exam.

A valid candidate physical ability test (CPAT) certification is required.
CPAT certification is accepted from PST or another agency provider licensed by the IAFF/IAFC. To be valid, CPAT testing must have been completed within the last calendar year.
Candidates without valid certification who are scheduled for oral board interviews may request a test fee waiver.

How to prepare for the candidate physical ability test (CPAT)
Engage in advanced physical training before the CPAT, targeting muscle groups used in lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and other actions related to firefighter tasks. A workout program may include distance running, sprints, rowing, stair climbing with a weight pack, and weight lifting to develop both the upper and lower body.

Step 8: Recruit academy
Successful candidates will begin a firefighter recruit academy.
Candidates will receive updates regarding application status by email.
Tumwater hires paramedics, too!
Firefighters/paramedic positions are utilized throughout Thurston County by the public agencies of the cities of Olympia, Tumwater, and Lacey Fire District #3. Candidates interested in interviewing with specific agencies will be required to complete the following before taking the Medic One protocol test. TCMO packets will consist of informational materials regarding
- Olympia Fire Department: Complete the Public Safety Testing (PST) CPAT and written exam requirements–firefighter.
- Tumwater Fire Department: Public Safety Testing (PST) or National Testing Network CPAT.
- Lacey Fire District 3: Complete any IAFF-approved CPAT courses (including PST) and National Testing Network5 Panel Test. Lacey does not require the 5-panel test be taken before our protocol test. However, prior completion is encouraged so as to not delay your interview process with their agency.
