Sidewalks require 8' overhead clearance

In the City of Tumwater, there must be an 8’ overhead clearance of trees and shrubbery on all City sidewalks for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists alike. Low hanging vegetation can obscure the line-of-sight, leaving you more prone to accident and injury. Remember, it is important to see and be seen.

Roadways require 14' overhead clearance

A 14’ overhead clearance of trees and shrubbery over all roads in the City of Tumwater is also mandated by ordinance. This safety measure concerns the line of sight of all school buses, transit buses, garbage and other City trucks, as well as any other high profile vehicles. High profile shrubbery can also cause damage to these types of vehicles if overhanging branches scrape against the sides of the vehicles as they drive past.

Notices

If a complaint has either been called in to Transportation Operations, or our City work crews find problem areas, a notice will be sent to the property owner to clear the specific area. The property owner is given two weeks to comply with the request, but if no action has taken place by then, the City will assume the responsibility and clear the area. To maintain preferred aesthetics, property owners are encouraged to ensure the matter is handled before the two-week deadline.
