Pioneer Park Solar EV Charger Meeting

City staff will host a public meeting from 6-7 p.m., Sept. 11 at Pioneer Park to gather community feedback and discuss plans to deploy a solar-powered, off-grid, dual-port EV Charger at the park.

The charger will be funded with a $87,052 grant from the WA Department of Commerce, along with $12,742 from the City’s budget for sustainability initiatives. The first of its kind in the region, the charger is part of a pilot project to see if the chargers are suitable for further expansion into City Parks.

“This kind of charging solution is not connected to the energy grid and thus will not strain the grid, nor will it go down in the event of power outages,” said Tumwater Sustainability Coordinator Alyssa Jones Wood.

The solar charging station will be placed in an ADA accessible location and will also include a 110-volt outlet intended for charging other e-mobility devices such as electric wheelchairs or electric bikes. Use of the charger will be free to the public. Installation is scheduled within the next 6 months. An additional public meeting will be held after the installation.
