Transportation-related emissions made up more than a third of all Thurston County’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2022. About 87% of those transportation emissions came from on-road gasoline and diesel vehicles. The Thurston Climate Mitigation Plan includes various strategies intended to reduce those transportation-related emissions including:
- Increase the adoption of electric vehicles.
- Increase the use of public transit.
- Increase the use of active forms of travel (such as bicycling and walking).
No single strategy is likely to help us reach our emission reduction goals. Each and every strategy must be utilized to its maximum extent. Read through the strategies below to learn how you can be part of the solution.
Electric Vehicles
An Electric Vehicle, also known as an EV, is a vehicle that can be powered by an electric motor that draws electricity from a battery and is charged through an external source. EVs have evolved since their early days and now boast much longer trip range, lower prices, a greater diversity of make/model options, and ample used vehicle stock. As of July 2024, there are more than 4,400 EVs registered to Thurston County addresses.
There have never been so many federal, state, and utility incentives to combine to make driving electric more affordable. Learn about all the programs and incentives below.
