Tumwater Police Department Voluntary Camera Registry

The Tumwater Police Department (TPD) is partnering with the community to create a voluntary registry of residential and business security cameras. Video footage from community security cameras has become an important tool when investigating crimes.

Participants simply provide basic information about their cameras and, if a crime occurs in that area, Police Officers may contact the owners to ask if they are willing to review or provide relevant footage.

Why is the Tumwater Police Department creating this registry?

Currently, when a crime occurs, Police Officers must canvass the surrounding area for residential or business security cameras that may provide video footage relevant to the investigation. The process takes time and resources. A camera registry allows Officers to quickly identify the location of nearby cameras and contact information for the camera owners.

Does registering my camera give the Police Department access to my camera feed?

No. By registering, you let TPD know you have an external-facing camera on your property. If there is an investigation, a Police Officer may reach out to you using the contact information you provide. You will be asked if you are willing to share any footage your camera may have captured. Police Officers are not able to access your camera feed or equipment, and you may decline to participate at any time.

Do I have to provide footage to the police when asked?

No. Your participation remains completely voluntary at all times. If there is an investigation near your camera, you may be contacted and asked if you are willing to share any relevant footage, but you may decline at any point.

Will information about my address or camera be shared publicly?

No. Access to camera locations and contact information is limited to authorized members of the Tumwater Police Department.

How often will I be contacted regarding my camera?

We hope we don’t have to contact you regarding your camera at all! You will only be contacted if an incident occurs in your area, and Police Officers believe your camera may have captured relevant footage.
