Preparedness, prevention & emergency management

With prevention and emergency preparedness, the fire department puts the tools necessary to aid in disasters within the hands of the public. The Tumwater City Council’s strategic priorities call for the city to “provide sufficient quality public safety services” which includes implementation of emergency management programs. The fire chief coordinates and chairs the regular emergency management committee of senior and technical city staff to plan and prepare for disaster response. The city puts a very high emphasis on emergency management training with all employees completing the basic Federal Emergency Management Act (FEMA) training. First responders, management, specialized staff and senior staff received additional training specific to their disciplines.

The fire department also conducts regular drills and exercises to aid in the eventual response to emergencies. The department recently instituted a fire education and inspection program to help the Tumwater business community to prevent fires. The program has public and private benefits. Training and public information on emergency preparedness are regularly included in newsletters and community events.
