Becoming a Tumwater Police Officer

Tumwater police officers enjoy top-of-the-line equipment and uniforms. All necessary equipment is provided by the City. Officers also receive $1,100 annually for uniform and equipment replacement, in addition to a monthly stipend for uniform maintenance.

All commissioned staff have assigned take-home cars and are issued handguns, back-up weapons, rifles, and shotguns.

Pay and Benefits

A Current Salary Schedule is available through the City's online application center.
Specialty assignment pay, education incentive, and physical fitness incentives are available. Twelve paid holidays, including a floating holiday. Eight hours of vacation accrued every month after one year of service (earned vacation hours increase on scale).

Entry Level Police Officer Applicants

Each applicant must be 21 years of age with no felony or domestic violence convictions, and possess a valid Washington driver's license at the time of appointment. All candidates must complete a background check, polygraph, psychological exam, and medical screening.  Successful applicants must complete a 720-hour academy and a three-month field-training program.

Certified Police Officer Application Process

Each applicant must have completed the WA State Criminal Justice Training Center Basic Law Enforcement Academy and be a certified WA State Peace Officer.  The applicant must have less than two years of police experience.

All candidates must complete a background check, polygraph, psychological exam, and medical screening.

Lateral Police Officer Application Process

Must have been employed as a full-time law enforcement officer in a civilian policy agency or sheriff's office with at least two years of prior service. All candidates must complete a background check, polygraph, psychological exam, and medical screening. Out-of-state candidates must complete a Washington State equivalency academy within one year of appointment.
