Tumwater University Police Citizen's Academy

Tumwater University Police Citizen’s Academy is a FREE 3-week, two evenings per week, classroom based course. Our goal is to facilitate a better understanding of local police services and the criminal justice system through education and hands-on learning exercises. Instructors are commissioned police officers and detectives that are eager to share information about their job to keep our community safe.

The City has hosted Tumwater University, a college-themed community education and engagement program, since 2012. After graduation from Tumwater University, many "students" expressed a much better understanding of their local government and its services. Classes offered by the Police Department have been very popular at Tumwater University. The Police Citizen's Academy was developed in 2015 to offer a personal look at police services, public safety, and the criminal justice system in Tumwater. And continue the tradition of Tumwater University's fun learning atmosphere.

What will I learn by attending the Police Citizen’s Academy?

The curriculum is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the Tumwater Police Department’s operation. Classes include criminal law and the justice system, police patrol procedures, use of force, 911 communications, crime prevention, DUI/ traffic enforcement, domestic violence, school safety, narcotics, and investigations.

Demonstrations by the K-9 unit and student participation add to the learning and excitement. The course is concluded with a graduation ceremony. All participants receive a diploma and a Tumwater University Police Citizen’s Academy t-shirt at graduation.
